Ma Pavilion: a building devoted to the void

In Kyoto we designed a pavilion without walls. How a 9 cm roof frames a garden.

A timber pavilion with a thin roof over a raked gravel garden

The foundation’s request was simple: a place where visitors can sit and look at the garden. So we drew a building that does not enclose the garden but only frames it.

A thin roof

The copper-clad roof is only nine centimetres thick. Eight slender columns carry it; from afar it seems to float above the garden.

An empty floor

There is nothing on the floor. The polished hinoki invites visitors to sit and be alone with the garden.
